Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket following Australia’s semi-final defeat to India in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai. The 35-year-old, who informed his teammates of the decision after the match, will continue to play Test cricket and T20 Internationals, with an eye on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics where T20 cricket will debut.
Smith described his ODI career as a “great ride,” highlighting his two World Cup wins in 2015 and 2023 as standout moments. He emphasized that stepping away now allows Australia to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Smith remains focused on Test cricket, looking forward to upcoming series against the West Indies and England, as well as the World Test Championship final.
Over a stellar career spanning 170 ODIs, Smith scored 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28 with a strike rate of 86.96. His record includes 12 centuries, 35 half-centuries, and a highest score of 164 against New Zealand in 2016. As captain, he led Australia in 64 matches with a 50%-win rate, achieving notable victories such as the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy and a tri-series win in the Caribbean.
Smith’s retirement marks the end of an era for Australian cricket while paving the way for new talent to shine.
