On January 10, 2025, Tamim Iqbal officially confirmed his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career. This announcement comes after a period of speculation regarding his future in the sport, especially with the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in mind.
Tamim had initially retired from all forms of international cricket on July 6, 2023. However, he reversed this decision just a day later due to intervention from then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and discussions with key figures in Bangladesh cricket. Despite briefly returning to play three ODIs, he was not selected for the ODI World Cup squad later that year.
As of now, Tamim has not participated in any international matches since September 2023 but has been active in domestic cricket, notably leading Fortune Barishal in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and winning the Player of the Tournament award. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had expressed interest in including him for the Champions Trophy but respected his need for time to make a decision.
The BCB is set to announce its squad for the Champions Trophy by January 12, 2025, and they have indicated that they are waiting on Tamim’s final decision regarding his availability.
