Harry Brook has been appointed as the new captain of England’s white-ball teams, succeeding Jos Buttler. The announcement was made by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on April 7, 2025, following Buttler’s resignation after England’s disappointing campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Brook, aged 26, has been a pivotal figure in England’s batting lineup since his debut in 2022. He is currently ranked second in the ICC Test batting rankings and has shown leadership potential, having captained England in Buttler’s absence during a series against Australia last year. Brook also led the England U19 team at the 2018 World Cup.
“It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain,” Brook stated, expressing his gratitude to his family and coaches for their support. He aims to drive England towards winning series and major tournaments. Brook’s first assignment as captain will be a series against the West Indies starting on May 29, marking the beginning of England’s preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
