After winning the toss, the Mumbai Indian decided to bowl first. They unleashed total devastation as the batters of the Kolkata Knight Riders failed to make a decent start in the match. At one point, the score was 57 at the loss of five wickets for KKR. They had lost wickets to Rinku Singh, ShreyasIyer, Phil Salt, Sunil Narine, and AngkrishRaghuvanshi. It was the 83-run 6th wicket stand between Manish Pandey and VenkateshIyer that brought KKR back into the game.
However, the visitors couldn’t capitalise on this power-packed partnership as KKR lost wickets in quick succession in the death overs. In the end, KKR managed to put together an okayish total of 169 runs on the board. For the Mumbai Indians, Bumrah picked up three wickets after conceding 18 runs. Impact sub NuwanThushara was not that economical, but his ace bowling attack in the powerplay sent the top order of KKR to dugout. MI skipper Hardik Pandya also picked up two wickets.
The Mumbai Indians began their chase on a faltering note. Losing three wickets inside the powerplay, MI were never really in the game. It was Suryakumar Yadav’s spirited knock of 56 runs that did bring some hope for the hosts, but Mitch Starc’s splendid bowling left them reeling. In the end, MI lost to KKR by 24 runs. Starc, who has faced backlash for a poor show this season, picked up four wickets and conceded just 33 runs. In fact, he picked up three wickets in the 19th over alone.
